Terms of Service

King for a Day (“the Service”) is a novelty auction. You bid real money for a promotional placement. The Service runs one auction per category (“kingdom”), each with its own page. The winning bid in a kingdom has its submitted website or X profile featured on that kingdom’s page for the following 24-hour window (“the reign”). The single highest winning bid across all kingdoms is additionally featured on our main landing page for that window. By placing a bid you agree to these terms.

You are buying a chance at a temporary advertising placement. You are not buying goods, an ownership stake, an investment, or anything of resale value.

Cycles are 24 hours long and every kingdom’s auction closes at the same moment each day. Bids compete only against other bids in the same kingdom; when the window closes, the highest paid bid in each kingdom is crowned and holds that kingdom’s page for the next window while a fresh auction opens. A reign runs for the full window: a crowned entry cannot be displaced by a later bid before its reign ends.

• Bids are in whole US dollars, minimum $1.
• Taking the #1 spot in a kingdom requires exceeding that kingdom’s current top bid by the posted increment. In the final minutes of a cycle a posted anti-sniping premium applies to bids claiming #1.
• Raising your own bid replaces your existing entry; you are charged only the difference between the new bid and what you have already paid this cycle.
• One kingdom per cycle: your first bid of a cycle commits your site or handle to that kingdom until the cycle closes. Later bids that cycle raise your position there. You may choose a different kingdom once the next cycle opens.
• A bid counts only once its payment has completed through our payment processor.
• The crown must rest: after a win, the same website or handle cannot bid during its reign or for one day after it ends. No entry can hold a page on consecutive windows.

All completed payments are non-refundable, including bids that are outbid and do not win the cycle. That is the nature of the auction: every bid placed during a window is a paid entry, and only the top entry in each kingdom wins. Do not bid money you are not prepared to lose to a higher bidder.

Payments are processed by Stripe. We never see or store your card details. If we cancel a reign or remove your entry for a reason other than a violation of these terms, we will refund the affected payment at our discretion.

When you bid, you submit a URL (a website or an X handle). We fetch that page and display its public metadata — title, description, and icon — on the bid board, and, if you win your kingdom, on that kingdom’s page for your reign — and on the main landing page as well if yours is the highest winning bid of the day. You represent that:

• you own the site or handle you submit, or have the right to promote it;
• it does not contain or link to anything illegal, deceptive, malicious (malware, phishing), hateful, or sexually explicit;
• it does not infringe anyone’s trademark, copyright, or other rights.

We may remove or refuse any entry at any time, at our sole discretion, with no refund if the removal is for a violation of this section. A reigning entry that turns bad mid-reign can be removed mid-reign.

We aim for continuous uptime but the Service is provided “as is” and “as available.” Outages, bugs, cycle-timing errors, or third-party failures may shorten or interrupt a reign. Our total liability to you for any claim arising from the Service is capped at the amount you paid us in the 30 days before the claim arose.

No bots, scripts, or automated bidding. No exploiting bugs in the cycle or payment flow. No submitting other people’s sites to embarrass them. We may block bidders and void entries that break these rules.

The bid board, the Hall of Kings, and the landing page are public. Your submitted URL, its scraped metadata, your bid amount, and click counts on your entry are displayed publicly and may remain visible in the Hall of Kings indefinitely after a winning reign.

We may update these terms; the effective date above will change when we do. Continued bidding after a change means you accept it.
